Göksu Delta is a critically important wetland with endangered bird species, plant presence and sea turtles breeding on its beaches.
The species and habitat research and monitoring project carried out in the Göksu Delta, which has been protected by the Ramsar Convention since 1994, was carried out in 2010 on behalf of the Special Environment Directorate (currently the General Directorate of Conservation of Natural Assets).
Within the scope of the study carried out in Silifke district of Mersin;
• Göksu Delta habitat types and threats to these habitats were determined,
• Threats against the summer duck and ferruginous duck were determined and the reproductive success of the species was monitored,
• The threats against the endangered sand lily species and its population were determined,
• The populations and reproductive successes of Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, sea turtles that breed in the area, were determined,
• Endangered turtle eggs were moved to brood chambers
• Turtle nests were caged,
• Local people were trained.
